Karlsson Poised To End Swedish Drought At PGA

By Tony Jimenez

VIRGINIA WATER - Robert Karlsson, bidding to become the first Swedish winner of the PGA Championship, coasted into a four-shot lead after the third round of the European Tour's flagship event on Saturday.

The 1.96-metre Karlsson, one of the tallest players on the circuit, carded a two-under-par 70 for an 11-under tally of 205 on a difficult day for scoring on Wentworth's West Course.

The sun shone throughout but gusting winds got stronger as the day went on. Only three players broke 70, the lowest round a 68 by Argentina's Rafa Echenique.

Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez (72) and Briton Oliver Wilson (73) shared second place on 209, one ahead of overnight leader Paul McGinley who slumped to a seven-over 79 to join India's Jyoti Randhawa (69) and Daniel Vancsik (72) of Argentina on 210.

"It was very, very tricky out there," Karlsson told reporters. "The wind was so strong at times and it was really, really gusty.

"But tomorrow is another day and if there can be an eight-shot swing today (at the top of the leaderboard) it can be an eight-shot swing tomorrow."

McGinley, four ahead at the start of the day, set the tone for his round with a double-bogey six at the first hole after finding sand off the tee and taking three putts to get down from the fringe of the green.

The Dubliner limped to the turn in 38, three over, and was unable to stem the tide of dropped shots on the back nine.
